Urgent Care vs. Planned Parenthood: STD Testing Cost & Privacy Comparison

The “Awkward” Bill in the Mail
You did the responsible thing and got tested. But two weeks later, a letter from the insurance company arrives at your house detailing “Lab Services – Venereal Disease Screen.”
If you are on your parents’ or spouse’s insurance plan, this is a nightmare scenario.
When choosing between Urgent Care and Planned Parenthood, you are balancing three things: Speed, Cost, and Privacy. Making the wrong choice can cost you hundreds of dollars or your privacy.
Speed vs. Wallet (The Decision Matrix)

Do you need results today, or do you need to save money? Use this checklist.
✅ Choose Planned Parenthood If…
- Low Budget: You have no insurance or a high deductible. They offer “Sliding Scale” fees based on income.
- Privacy is #1: You don’t want to use insurance because of privacy concerns.
- Routine Check: You have no symptoms but just want a regular checkup.
⚠️ Choose Urgent Care If…
- Active Symptoms: It burns, itches, or hurts right now. You need immediate treatment.
- Speed: You can’t wait weeks for an appointment.
- Your Own Insurance: You are the primary policyholder and don’t care about mail being sent to your house.
Cost Reality Check
The “Sticker Price” difference is massive, especially for the uninsured.
💰 Price Tag Breakdown (Without Insurance)
- 🏥 Urgent Care: $250 – $400+
$150 for the visit + Separate bill for labs ($100-$200). - 💙 Planned Parenthood: $0 – $150
Based on your income. Often free for students or low-income earners. - 💻 At-Home Kits (e.g., Everlywell): $100 – $150
Mail-in urine sample. Good for privacy, but no doctor consultation included.

💡 The “EOB” Danger (For Insured Patients)
If you use your parents’ or spouse’s insurance, the insurance company will mail an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) to the policyholder’s address. It will say “Lab Services” or “Office Visit” and the facility name.
How to hide it: Call the insurance company before your visit and ask to switch to “Digital EOBs Only” or ask if you can set up a confidential mailing address for your specific patient ID.
